Chennai Super Kings will meet Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Vivo Indian Premier League 2018 final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday May 27.
Chennai went straight to the final at the first attempt, after beating Sunrisers in a low-scoring thriller in Mumbai in the first qualifying playoff.
They finished second in the table, level on points with Sunrisers, to whom they gave up a marginal run-rate differential.
The Hyderabad side got there in the end, though, as they made it through via a second-chance eliminator match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday night.
That arrested a run of five matches without a win, as the side who dominated the early exchanges of this year’s competition only stumbled through to the final.
In what has widely been termed the most engaging IPL season of all, returning franchise Chennai Super Kings have defied predictions to become the first to reach the final.
Retaining the core of their successful players over nine seasons, with the exception of R Ashwin, and some smart new purchases proved immense in the MS Dhoni-led franchise finishing second on the points table at the end of the league phase. In the first Qualifier, CSK beat table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad for the third time in a row this season to move to Sunday’s IPL 2018 final.
After battling out with other six teams MS Dhoni-led CSK and Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad will leave no stone unturned to win the title.
Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan produced an all-around effort to guide SunRisers Hyderabad to a 13-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier and take the visitors to the final of the 2018 Indian Premier League.
Rashid Khan was on fire for SunRisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2018 Qualifier 2 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday night. The Afghanistan teenager starred with both the bat, ball and was also electric in the field as SRH beat KKR by 14 runs to march into the IPL 2018 final where they will face MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Rashid Khan smashed 34 not out off just 10 balls to power SRH to 174 for seven. In Rashid Khan's cameo was a shot that reminded fans and commentators of MS Dhoni's famous helicopter shot.
Prasidh Krishna bowled a full length delivery to Rashid Khan and the Afghan sensation deposited the ball to the square leg boundary. Matthew Hayden, who was in the commentary box, said the shot had the twirl of MS Dhoni's helicopter shot while Sanjay Manjrekar called it the shot of the innings.
Both the teams had earlier faced each other in the qualifier 1 at Wankhede Stadium on April 22 in which CSK held onto their nerves to win the tie against SRH by wickets courtesy a fine knock from Faf de Plessis.
